I think a move toward simplicity in music is just as
revolutionary/evolutionary as bebop's complexity. Personally one of
the things that draws me toward sampling-based music is its
refinement, simplicity, and repetition. It takes the best and
sometimes worst from another work and presents it to us in a
crystallized fashion. I don't think I need to remind anybody of how
complex our day-to-day lives seem. The refined beats and samples of
artists like those that we talk about on this list are pretty
refreshing when everything's said and done.

I agree with you completely. Our lives are nuts. There is a great deal
to be said for repetition and the possiblities of sampling, etc.
However where is the sensitivity? Shouldn't music as an expression of
human emotion convey the aspects of our lives - both the nutty stuff and
the chill stuff? Sometimes I feel discouraged by the acid jazz world.
Like there isn't enough sensitivity -artistically and musically
speaking.
Now, of course there is always going to be the good music which is
sensitive and wonderful. The weak points of the simple repetivie stuff,
for me at least, seems to be the lack of musical and personal
sensitivity. The expression. The art. The emotion. It is all so
subjective. But I guess that is why I prefer acid jazz with more improv,
and experimentation. The stuff that takes it to the limits and beyond.
That is what I would call a contemporary parallel to the older stuff.
