as I was leaving town I saw Elson's post and wondered if the tidal wave of
posts surrounding this idea would happen again. I haven't had time to read
all the messages in detail but last year's problem was that we spent too much
time conceptualizing. The inital flurry of interest degenerated into 80 or
so posts about the compilation *title*, which is probably the last thing we
have to worry about. So I just want to remind the group is that for this
thing to happen, we should choose those coordinators *now* and then let them
go to work. I don't know how we can easily do that but I'll put in a vote for
Elson, providing he indicates that he has time. I would be very happy to help
out in that role as well.
Furthermore, I think that we should worry about costs a little later. The
financial aspect of the thing is a significant issue but only comes into
consideration once we're ready to press. Before that, we must come up with a
detailed track listing, the responsibility of the coordinators and those who
help with the web page. My question is what happens if we get more tracks
that the CD can contain? And how many should people submit, and who to? This
should be our first goal. Let's worry about the financial part once we're
ready to pull the trigger. Putting together a track listing costs about as
much as the postage it takes to send the coordinator the tapes and whatever
web-based costs there are.
Another observation I would like to quickly make is that it seems we are much
better positioned to do this this year than we were last year. I have the
feeling there are more people making music on the list this year than there
were last year. This is a very good thing....we had one naysayer last year
who didn't think there would be enough material.
I also wonder about the stylistic differences of the music that may be
contained on the CD. How many tracks are we going to allocate to
sample-based, headphone music and how many to live acts? Is the rampant
eclecticism that will be apparent on this perceived as a good thing by all
participants? I think it is and that it is precisely that eclectisism that
defines this list.
Finally, maybe one of the people here who cross-subscribes to the IDM list can
ask around there how they pulled it off.
Anyways since I'm out in S.F. and out of the flow this week I have to cut it
short but wanted to let everyone know that I'm quite enthused about the
project and really hope it materializes. I would love to help in any way I
possibly can..... we should first compile a list of all the people considering
sending tracks so we have an idea of how many we're dealing with. I don't
know if that was the objective of your post, Derek.
As for me, I'm definitely considering sending in a track or two....and I would
be very enthused to write or collaborate with someone on the liner notes as
well, as well as help out with coordination if necessary. .
I'm behind it 100%. Let's get organized. Now.
