yet more compilation

We're getting close to 15 people I think who are going to submit to this
thing. Who-hoo! Although it may take a bit of work, I'm fairly confident
that it can become a reality as long as we keep on track. I think we already
owe ourselves a pat on the back for getting this far.

I've had less time to look at the mails from the last few days, so I can't
address many of the specific issues...and if I haven't gotten back to you
regarding where to send tapes etc. it's because I'm still figuring out
exactly how to do this without making people send tapes everywhere across the
world to multiple people. Using the digital media to send *complete* demos may
also be a bit off track (I think that was mentioned somewhere within the
morass of posts) but people who can make .aiff or .wav soundfiles are
encouraged to do so ahead of time.

Let me just outline what I think are the goals for the month of January:

1. The aggregation of 30-secondish snippets of soundfiles from all interested
parties (this may take till mid-February)

2. Decision on how the ultimate selection of tracks for the CD project will be
made. I will send a post on that one when the time comes.

3. Decision on what to do with the old compilation (this, as I said, was up to
the artists, but I've only heard from 3 who submitted last time, but we will
talk amongst ourselves soon). This will be greatly helped by the fact that
James is going to send me a copy of the original comp. Certain people have
expressed concern about using those older tracks, for either creative or other
reasons. But the fact remains is that it may save us some time & effort.

4. Initial construction of web site. Dj herb's plan for the layout was great,
IMHO, and it will definitely come together well. Some of you
graphic/web-savvy people should contact him at some point and help him out.
Some listee background info has already been submitted to this list (although
I don't know if all the people who have submitted their info to the list have
expressed interest in being on the CD) so we can just cut & paste that.
Background info on the list should probably come from the acid-jazz server (if
that's ok, erik), with a prominent link thereto on the same page.

the soundfile aggregation part is the bit that will take the most effort, so
after I get home (I'm pretty psyched to get there so I can get settled and
organize this thing properly) I will figure out who everyone should send tapes
to. It may very well be me. Though I still maintain that I really don't want
to make judgements on *style*. However, I may feel that I should on
*quality*. Compositions using a General Midi instrument set probably will not
do. But we'll see. To the extent possible, we should at least make this thing
sound professional. I'm sure everyone realizes that.

Regarding samples - Marc, your issue is good - but you may have a bit more
problems using that song than you used to - *you just told the world who you
sampled!* Remeber, this list is archived. That's unwritten rule #1 of all
producers - say only as much as someone else makes you about what existing
sound you use. And mask it at all possible costs within the tune.
I'm really not an authority on sample usage. I guess if we want to use your
track, and you feel that you have a sample issue, but you want the track on
there, it will be your responsibility to obtain clearance.

Finally, regarding list traffic. The volume will go down as soon as the thing
is up and running. I am going to set up a sub list on my machine at home when
I get there, so all communication will be as described, periodic updates.
I'll try to limit them to once a week once the ball's rolling. For now, just
delete anything with the word compilation in it. This is one of the more
ambitious things we've ever tried to do here and so I hope you bear with us if
our enthusiasm is reflected in the number of our posts.

I will be dealing with a lot of this on Monday night, by the way, so I hope to
have an address for people to send tapes to by mid-week. I have a few
off-line things to figure out, and then we'll get the ball rolling.

BTW, the breaks list tried to do a compilation tape last year - I literally
stumbled across a page describing it - anybody know about that or the IDM
thing????
