Yes, those things do exist, But doesn't that take all the fun out of
records? You can't scratch or beat-match with a laser turntable. As I
understand the way those things work, it's sort of like a laserdisc player
that accepts phonograph records.
No access to the record at all. Even if they were available, they'd be
totally useless to a DJ. Unless there are some classical music DJs out
there ("Yo, DJ Bartok bustin' Beethoven's 9th on da wheels of steel, nome
sane?")

But, of course... :)

That's only a half-truth. Early compact discs were printed with an ink on
the label side that was potentially damaging to the
optical information on the other side. That situation changed towards the
late '80s when improved, non-damaging inks were introduced (and are now
used). Incidentally, CDs have been commercially available for...just about
15 years! I have yet to hear someone complain about their copy of Michael
Jackson's "Thriller" not being able to play. Only time will tell, though.

They do last way longer than cassettes, which will degrade whether you've
played them or not!

As for CDs vs records (they are no longer made of vinyl, so I refuse to
call them vinyl), most sound systems in clubs are so loud and room ambience
muddles the sound so much that any sort of superiority in sound quality is
a moot point!
