Dear List:
Im ticked off at the guy who got angry at the person who
used the word "down-tempo. " Add that to the fact that many of
these same people hate the word trip-hop , and you have a situation
where people atre mad at any label you use for the slow
(mostly), instumental break beat music ,with odd noises
&scratching that we all have come to love.
When I first heard this stuff on a mix-tape consisting of
Mowax(Infux era), Cleanup and Dorado(dub mixes) in '93 . "I said
this stuff's like (jamaican)Dub only with afro-american influences
instead of warped reggae tracks. I called it funk dub or dub funk
then I heard the t-word. It fit and it was being used in print . But
noooo! this word was being trashed opartially because it lumped in
the c-bros(dust then) and the Wall of sound gang who were faster and
rockier. Plus there was .... something -- people just hated the word
. Shadow says "Im hip-hop period." Tricky trashes all labels.
Well, let me say that labels help to define as well as limit
genres-usually in turn. still this music needs some name; how can you
ask the guy at the wrecka-sto for more of "that stuff" . How can you
buy blind when the stuff isnt grouped under some heading in the rack.
Sure you can buy everyting on some imprints(any mowax) but hey, that can
get you into trouble(Andrea parker, the Excursions series) . F#$@!
it call it something d*****mit
