Wasn't the first album recorded live? It says so on the liner notes, though
I find it hard to believe (quite possibly, it was recorded live, but taken
to the studio later for editing, overdubs and sampling (stuff like the
"Buddah" loop,
sounds like they sampled themselves).

Also, when an album is recorded, chances are the songs are at least several
months old, possibly more than a year old by the time it's on the shelves,
and I'm sure GC had the time to re-fine the tunes on stage during their
regular NYC shows or on tour, so it's probably a case of knowing the
material better and knowing what to do with it. The first album, as well as
everyone's first album, has songs on it that the band has probably been
working on for years, so by the time it's committed to tape it's already
perfected.

There's a saying in the music industry, "It takes your whole life to make
your first album, but only ten months to make your second..."
