It's *similar* to a Roland 808 bass drum tuned to a low decay, but it's not
the same thing, nor is it a sample.
It's a simple sine wave sound with a medium-fast decay (fast enough for a
percussion sound, but long enough to sustain) and it can be created on just
about any analog or FM digital (i.e. Yamaha DX-series) synthesizer. If your
analog synths don't have sine waves, bring your filters all the way down
until it sounds muffled (tink dub bass stylee, mon!)

I personally use a Yamaha DX7 synth for my jungle basslines, using only one
operator (for anyone familiar with DX programming...if you are and would
like the parameters, email me). EQed with the low end pumped up, no one
could tell it's from a digital synth. The keyboardist in my live drum n
bass side project has a DX27, and I programmed a Jungle Bass sound for him
too.

If you're a bass guitarist, you can get a similar sound by setting your
bass guitar tone settings to treble=0
mid=0 bass=all the way up, and running your sound through a compressor,
envelope filter (set to REAL low sensitivity) and (if necessary) an octave
pedal.
