****** NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM O. O. DISCS *****

O. O. DISCS, INC. is pleased to announce the release of OO #31, WIND IN THE
CHANNEL by Stuart Saunders Smith, the second complete CD release of his
music. The disc features 64:00 minutes of music with eight different works
of primarily acoustic chamber and solo music. The dates of compositions
range from the 1974 GIFTS with flutist John Fonville and Thomas Goldstein,
vibraphone and Paul Hoffman, piano, to the 1995 composition entitled,
CALIFORNIA DRIVING with performance and realization by Sylvia Smith. Other
performers on the disc include James Ostryniec, oboe; Thomas Moore, piano;
Julia Whybrow, recorder/ voice; and Stuart Saunder Smith, voice.

Smith's prior OO release entitled, CRUX (OO #11) was rated B Plus in the
VILLAGE VOICE Consumer Guide about which they wrote, "A fertile and
persuasive music philosopher......like (Jerry) Hunt he brings a '70s sound
world to idiosyncratic fruition ....." FANFARE MAGAZINE has written, "Smith
is an unrepentant 'retro-experimentalist.' .... if one is to understand
difficult music (and this is difficult music) then knowing any tradition
from which it comes even an anti-tradition, can be a help. This music has
strong ties to both Cageian aesthetic of serendipity and the
late-expressionist sound of much atonal music."

Stuart Saunders Smith has written, written and written piles of music for
over 20 years with no time devoted to the truly American affliction of
self-promotion and 'composer careerism!' Before eclecticism was vogue,
improvisation hot, and various other trends of the month, Smith was composing
and following his own path that has resulted in over 40 major works ranging
from purely instrumental, to singing percussionists, to short-wave radio,
poetry, graphic notation, and more. Stuart's style is eclectic by nature and
has been shaped by his early jazz experiences and his strong feeling for the
communal, creative spirit and improvisational techniques of jazz. He has
been recognized by a small but devoted group of composers and performers for
his singular journey of invention and exploration in the various areas of
composition.
