To put it in very simple terms any of the Native Tongues stuff (De La,
Tribe etcetc) and related (Gang Starr, The Roots etcetc) is where hip
hop and AJ started intersecting in late 80s. They all pick up on the
Last Poets/Gil Scott Heron vibe (these are the first artists to fuse
Jazz with Rap). And they definitely know their jazz (eg Ron Carter
playing on the second Tribe album). The early 80s hip hop you refer to
incorporates disco/Kraftwerk breaks - ie it's headed in the electro
direction. When you refer to modern style hip hop, I'm not sure what you
mean: take for instance the PFunk stuff. Well, I guess that might be a
distant branch of the family tree (George Clinton played with Bootsy
played with James who is Talkin' Loud AJ). The Puffy stuff, which
incorporates pop breaks as much as anything else (or so someone said the
other day on this list) is party music. I doesn't really have much to do
with AJ. I'm sort of making this up as I go along, so Flight and all you
hiphop headz, correct me if I'm wrong!
