Here are a few people I listen to and play in some of my sets:
Abdel Ali Slimani - Mraya, an interesting mixture
Khaled - The most commercial but still kicks is Sahra with a straight Marvin
Gaye rip that was a hit in Europe, I also have Khaled, produced by Michael
Brook and Don Was who also produces some of N' ssi N'ssi with other folks.
Rimitti is an incredible artist, she is over 70 years old but she is down.
Her disc, Sidi Mansour, has an all-star line-up of musicians from jazz and
schools, Flea from the Chilli Peppers plays bass on a track as does Robert
Fripp
While you are wandering in that school, try Baly Othmani and Steve Shehan,
they have two discs out called Assouf and Assarouf. There is a good
compilation called Planete Kabylie that has some great tracks on it. Some
others are Cheb Hasni, who was murdered by the extremists who do not like
the message of Rai. There is an album by Hamid Baroudi called City No Mad
that some very danceable tracks, I think that it may be out of print but it
is worth looking for if you think you might like the area where Rai meets
some electro-dance ideas. There is also a truly wonderful album called A
prayer For The Soul Of Layla, it's on Alula by Jamshied Sharifi. This might
be too world beat for some people but I just love it, it has a very
beautiful track that has Paula Cole doing a vocal.
