Man, what a show!
Saw Air play here last night @ the Olympia Theatre, Dublin.
Sean Lennon played support. He's ok if you're into that US idie
post-grunge sound. Some of his more heavy instrumentals where the band
got to work it out more were good. His voice is a bit whiney though. He
played for about an hour.
When he finished and while the crew were setting up, the music over the
PA was an Air tape of their mix that they did on BBC radio a few months
back. Nice mix tape! Some Beasties, Bowie, Beatles, Quincy Jones, solo
Lennon, Gainsbourg, Theme from MASH, Rollerball etc. Gives a good
indication where there comin from.
So eventaully AIR came on, well actually the band first - all dressed in
white. The band was 'Moog Cookbook' who were Beck's backing band when he
toured Odelay last year. Man, they're tight. The line up was Bass,
Drums, 2 keyboardists (one of whom looked a ringer for Walter Becker
circa '75!) and AIR both on more keyboards as well as vocoder and
guitar.
D'argent, Sexy Boy, Kelly touch the Stars (which turned into an electro
medley of Tommow never Knows and Gary Numan's Cars causing a breakout of
frenzied breakdancing!) Cassanova 70, Modular and that 2nd last song on
Moon Safari,name?
The thing is though, they only played for about 1 hour! But they did
apologise for the lack of material and hoped to have more tunes the next
time they tour. They said various bits & piecs between songs but it was
very difficult to make out what they actually said 'cause of their
accents plus they spoke thu vocoders.
So an all too short show but still...it blew my mind. Maybe not as blown
away as I was by 'Faust' last week but then that's another story
altogether!
RockOn,
gerry
