Mi> Mica Paris/Contribution - release from early 90s - I pursued this one
Mi> because of a track I enjoy on a comp...one of the Rebirth series I
Mi> think...she has a great voice but the disc is poorly produced and very
Mi> pop oriented.
i haven't heard her new record "black angel", but she does a nice cover of
sly stone's "if you want me to stay" which they retitled "stay"--should be
availible on single. i hate to say it, but her albums tend to be
inconsistent. the single "i wanna hold on to you" from her previous album
is
really dope, but the album is produced by narada michael walden (most known
for producing whitney houston, though he used to make music worth listening
to in the 70's), and is bad pop--btw, i *do* think good pop exists.
Mi> Unkle/Psyence Fiction: I'm not going there........
it's a little more rock than i would have liked, but it's really not a bad
album--you just have to listen to all of it (i had a messed up copy w/2 of
the 2nd record and no 1st...). i would have been happier if there hadn't
been so many vocal tunes, but whatever...
Mi> Courtney Pine/Underground - I bought this because I previously
Mi> purchased a remix disc called Other Stories (very soulful ...highly
Mi> recommend it!)...Underground, although touted as a meld of
Mi> hiphop/jazz/soul (one track w/Jehlisa), a large portion is straight up
Mi> jazz.
courtney pine has always been a real jazzer, he just digs the new beat stuff
too. my first exposure to him was via soul II soul ("courtney blows" from
the 2nd album), and the 1st record i ever bought by him sounded like the
reincarnation of john coltrane--no beats, just jazz...
Mi> Money Mark/Push The Button...I like Money Mark...but his vocals suck (
Mi> I suspect a previous incarnation as a Beach Boy)...his first disc
Mi> Mark's Keyboard Repair (minimalistic funk) is a must!
this guy i just don't get. he seems to sound fine when guesting w/the
beasties, but i think his solo stuff is overrated--but then again i'm not
into lo-fi for lo-fi's sake...
