There's a Technics 1200 FAQ, which I think you can find on hyperreal.org

Also, it's a silly trick, but in case you didnt know, sometimes the hum and
the channel cut is due to a bad connection between your cart and the
tonearm, and can be eliminated by licking the connectors on the back of your
cartridge. It's tasty too!
