I think there's a distinction to be made here in the States between
background music in commercials and soundtracks. I think big beat/breaks and
drum & bass are far more frequently used here in the States in commercials,
sound beds, backgrounds to tv promos, etc. While trip-hop/downtempo music is
very popular (right now) for use in certain movies. But keep in mind also
that for ever Massive Attack, Portishead, Chemical Bros, Propellerheads, Fat
Boy, Goldie, Roni Size and the like there are many, many similar artists
slaving away in virtual obscurity available only to the select few that shop
at the handful of trendy ma & pa import record stores scattered across the
country (or from our website :>). The point being that having the music used
in commercials or movies, whether it's big beat or trip-hop doesn't seem to
be bolstering the profile of the music as a whole, only a couple of lucky
major label (or big indies with big pockets) artists and bands.

A lot of downtempo stuff is promoted as "cinematic" music so it kind of
makes sense that it would get used in movies. Movie soundtracks (especially
the works of John Barry, Lalo Schifrin and Morricone) are an inspiration for
a lot of downtempo artists so it makes sense that a lot of downtempo tracks
would turn out "cinematic".

However, in Australia I would say jungle/drum & bass or big beat are the
preferred choice of advertising executives for "trendyprods".
