hey everyone...
... quick report on this summer's first Cryogenesis party, held last Sunday
on Shark Island in Sydney Harbour (small island with around 400 of us
spread out on picnic blankets). Damn, these things keep getting better.
The weather was superb, the views of the harbour were friggin spectacular,
and the music was righteous and sweet all day ... who said downtempo had to
be depressing! :-) Kodwo Eshun (who writes in Wire among other places, and
has written the sometimes great/sometimes difficult book _More Brilliant
than the Sun, Adventures in Sonic Fiction_) spun a lovely set, as did the
organisers, the Sub Bass Snarl crew, who had a live cello player in the
mix. Tunes during the day ranged from 60s jazz like Alice Coltrane to more
recent downtempo and jungley/beats shit. People, as always at these
things, managed to be very *nice* to each other, and it generally attracts
a pretty diverse crowd ... a few people even brought their kids along.
It's great watching the different vibe that small outdoor events like this
can foster, as compared to a club...
Nicest moment for me was playing boule in the afternoon, as the shadows
started to get longer, nicely set up with a cold beer looking out onto the
harbour while Sub Bass Snarl spun Cinematic Orchestra's "And Relax!", with
some tasty cello licks thrown in. Bliss.
Can't wait until March for Cryo no. 2. Sydney can still be a great place,
even if Olympics-hype threatens to drown out all the good shit....
kboy out.
(for the curious folks, Sub Bass Snarl have a website with pics of past
events at www.snarl.org)
