A short while back I lurked while several AJL threads shot out regarding the
banal commercialism of modern music. Volkswagen, in particular, seemed to
set several folks on fire with their recent TV ads (e.g., using Orb to sell
the new "flower power" bugs). Well guess what folks...they're at it again.
I'm not sure if VW is in the automotive or music industry if you've seen the
recently released Jetta commercial:
A young couple is driving their immaculate (probably expensive) black Jetta
through some urban neighborhood. They pop in a tape of some groovy music
(ANYONE know what it is???). Suddenly, all the activity on the street
(people walking, basketballs bouncing, streetlights blinking, trucks
unloading, water splashing) is in synchronization to the music...until the
driver ejects the tape ("Wow, that was interesting."). The VW hook line at
the end is something inane about how a Jetta makes everything come
together. Whew, what a stretch!!
Can't possibly see myself buying the car, but I'll buy the music if somebody
could ID it. Thanks, Volkswagen, for pushing the cool tunes. Too bad they
can't get rid of the smarmy advertising voiceover...
