I feel so stupid getting drawn into this thread, but
I feel that you should really preface this by stating
that it is your personal opinion. I have the utmost
respect for what you do, and am sure you do a fantastic
job at it, but for many people, matching beats, scratching,
and other "wholesale turntable trickery" for the sake of itself
can surely please the listener. Even though
this list may be at the opposite end of the spectrum
from the trackheads and floorbangers, it still comes off
as snobbish to assume that one type of DJ'ing is more
effective or artful than another. Respecting the integrity
of the compositions isn't necessarily the most important
thing. Myself, I'd like to hear the entire song, merged
gracefully with the next; but one cannot argue that someone
like Jeff Mills, who usually plays no record for longer
than a minute, is not a talented DJ who has a deep love
and respect for the integrity of the music and who is also
out there to provide an exciting listening experience for
the audience.
I guess it's really not worth arguing about, they're just
different things. I guess I enjoy making myself look like
a fool. Once again, respect to Leslie, in no way is this
message a jab or put-down. I just think that personal
preference shouldn't really become absolute truth.
