Hi listees..
I hadn't read the list last month, being in Italy for work and now slowly
catching up on all the very interesting topics as I'm back in Holland,
Rotterdam
The BNH riotters..good thing that they were caught..destroying my beautiful
city! F*ck all those hooligans and there aggresive behaviour!
Having travelled around in Italy for some time, here are some tips. I came
across a very nice hiphop-vinylstore in Verona, called Vibra (Via Cattaneo).
the man behind the decks is a real beatjuggler and there are often
live-sessions by Italian djs in this store. I bought an Italian hiphop 12"
by a group called: Piotta, very nice although I don't understand the lyrics
:). There are not a lot of places in northern Italy where you can dance to
a-j. I found some second-hand vinylstores though which delivered the
following finds:
Bennie Maupin - The Jewel in the Lotus (ECM records), very
kozmi-groovy/abstract jazz (for terminology, ask Mr. Witherspoon. also on
this list :) he is mostly known of playing for the headhunters I think.
Herbie Hancock is on there. a spacey album.
Sir Victor Uwaifo & his Titibitis (his what??) - Roots
African music from Nigeria..never heard of the man but his guitar playing is
surely okay. I have to listen to this more closely, it's not very much like
the recently very praised Fela (*what about his son's album "Shoki Shoki"
anyone heard it/bought it?) but it has it's own charm.
Maria Bethania- an old live album by this brazilian mpb-star, nice if you
like her voice.
Fafá de Belem -Tamba-Taja
this is more rootsy brazilian stuff, more like the music from the north-east
of Brazil. Lots of percussion and traditional rhythms.
I was also pleased to find two older hiphop albums by Eric B.& Rakim for a
far too low price: Let the Rhythm hit'em and Follow the Leader, 2 classic
albums cointaining the legendary Lyrics of Fury, Eric B. made my day, etc
etc..I'm sure the guy didn't know what he was selling..
During my trip back home I had to transfer in Munich where I went to the
World of Music shop (a kind of Virgin) which has a lot of new vinyl
(obviously delivered by Groove Attack). some buys:
Ozomatli: the Cut Chemist Suite and Super Bowl Sundae...hear dj Cut Chemist
freak out on these 2 12"s..guided by Chali 2na's (Jurrassic 5) lyrics these
are sure winners on the dancefloor.
Break n' Bossa - compiled by Bruno Bolla (??), Shema Records.
Ouch! this is a very good compilation. If you're into Jazzanova this is the
next best thing to the CIrcles cd (I finally got a copy of this last one and
yes it's magic!). Here's the tracklisting for Break n' Bossa:
Jazzanova Vs Har You Percussion Group - Welcome to the Party
Ian Pooley - What's your number - Jazzanova Renumber
Balanço - Metti una sera a cena - Jazzanova remix
Modaji - Outboard jeopardy - Club mix
Les Gammas - Servus Mr. Bond
Dj Matsuoka - The Will of Life
Rainer Trüby Trio - Galicia
Jazzanova - Atabaque
Chaser - Blue Planet
Jask - Eclipse
you see.. all good, no misses..more info at: ishtar@ishtar.it in Milan who
produced it. Distribution by Family Affair tel# 0039-02-5061928 fax
0039-02-5062782.
The new Alliance Ethnik 12" is partly produced by Prince Paul and funky as
before.
furthermore..I'm happy to see that a lot of old-timers are still on the list
and that a lot of newcomers keep still joining it. Next week I'm meeting
with another longtime subscriber, Alexandre Tahira from São Paulo, Brazil,
who is going to live in the (relatively) cold city of London for a longer
period. Before he left Brazil he was busy dj-ing with a brazilian hiphop
band, spreading vibes althrough São Paulo.
If there is to be an aj-comp I can probably contribute a song of the new cd
that I'm making with my afro-samba band, Sambalanço if this is considered aj
as well :))
cheers and keep-keep bouncing (now who used to end his mail with this line?)
