that's a really cool question. i don't have much of an
answer except to say that from a couple of
ethnnomusicology-type classes in college, I got the
impression that all major families of instruments
(percussion, winds, strings) emerged independently in
different parts of the world. like you have different
drums popping up in indonesia and in zaire and in
ireland and don't necessarily have any sort of
cultural exchange at all to ignite that phenomenon.
I'd imagine that the modern drum set really has very
european roots, in orchestral music.

Eh, lemme make it perfectly clear that this is not my
field and I really am just talking out of my ass from
what I remember from a few undergrad elective classes
several years ago.

oh yeah, and the salsa thing, of course a lot of the
drumming has african/yoruba roots, but some salsa
seems to have distinctly afropop/highlife sounds and
beats in it (listen to nu yorica 2), which I think are
pretty contemporary african styles, right? Like, not
dating back more than 50 years or so? do we have any
scholars in the house?
