adam: i'd definitely recommend checking out george lipsitz's book
dangerous crossroads (verso press). simply, it's about what happens when
a musical culture is brought to or performed in a different culture. he
focuses the discussion on several artists, including fela kuti, afrika
bambaataa, manu dibango, musical youth. [and i have a whole
undergraduate thesis on hip hop if you have any interest]

yes, absolutely. most directly, through the use of the drum. indirectly,
through rhythm and blues broadcasts from america. [and then kool herc
took the reggae stylee up north and started hip hop!]
i can flesh both of these out more if anyone's interested. let me know
directly.
OAJC: been diggin in the crates recently (SOURCElab 1, old bnh, etc) and
some of it's ageing well and some isn't. what still grabs you peeps?
