You speak of a bass/B-3 combination like it was some sort of law that the
two shouldn't meet! Wood and Medeski complement one another because Medeski
isn't your "typical" B-3 player...definitely not in the traditional vein.
Blue Note signed MMW (and Charlie Hunter, I believe) because they are
marketable to a segment of the jazz audience that the label needed to take
advantage of. A wise move, imo, because: 1) the band is worthy, 2) the label
benefits, and 3) a large number of MMW listeners are being turned on to the
sounds of John Patton, Grant Green, Lou Donaldson and a host of others.
I wouldn't even compare Medeski and Larry Goldings...both are talented, but
really two different breeds.
