While reasons for starting it might be trivial, the key thing is it fulfills
a need for a lot of people (including myself) who are dissatisfied with how
society is evolving. Burning the man doesn't claim to have any religious or
social significations, and thats part of the point--its cool to see
something burn down, especially when its loaded up with fireworks. It is
what it is. Burning man is not just about fun, but redifining how to have
fun.

As for the fee, for an event this size, it basically covers much of the
cleanup, cops, permits, ect. Also, the fee goes up as the day of the man
gets closer, so to dissuade people from just checking out the night of the
man, drink a few beers, and split. Obviously the vibe has changed since the
beginning, but there's also more things going on with more people. And
things can cost more money as they get bigger, so if it takes a fee to keep
it going, so be it. The shit is worth a 1000 bucks in my opinion.

They also use some of the money for grants on art projects. So some of this
is funneled back into the festival to allow people the time and materials to
build their contraptions. But I'm not an expert, so ask some people about
it...
