Brock,
While I agree with you to some extent, you may want to consider another
variable in the equation - which would be you the listener. The first time
you heard Premiere Symptomes, or Exit Planet Dust, there wasn't much like
that playing so it caught our ears and gave us something new. When the
artists evolved the sounds for subsequent albums, you were expecting
something new and fresh like the experience you had when you first heard
them but the artists were more focused on developing "their sound" for
whatever reason (more popular, more danceable, etc.) than they were in
remaking themselves with a new sound.
In terms of record sales, Moon Safari was the album that really blew up for
Air and the same for Dig Your Own Hole. The masses of music buyers aren't
as savvy as we are, always on the cutting-edge, always hungry for a new sound.
Besides, how many times has a favorite artist strayed from their sound and
then we go bash them for it.
This is kind of an interesting thought- whether the artists are making the
music for themselves (in which case they do whatever they damn well please)
or whether they're going for the charts (in which case they do what they
can to make them chart-able.)
Just a thought,
Gen
