Like Water For Chocolate is a good album ... I'm
not disputing that. The music and production is
outstanding. Completely and totally drenched in soul
and funk. Electro breaks and great sequencing.
"Soulquarians" are a force to be had in hip-hop. BUT,
my only complaint with the whole thing is Common's
lyrics and subjects. It's like half the album is ole
Common; the other half is this
    bragging-boasting-almost-(dare I say!)-jiggy-style
rapper. A friend of mine who is a hardcore Common fan,
been down with him since way back, said he's
disappointed in Common's lyrics on this one. Where
"One Day It Will All Make Sense" was insightful and
probing; "Like Water" is a bit scattered and lost.
Now, that's not to say, like I said at the
beginning, that the album sucks. "Funky For You,"
"Geto Heaven," "The Questions," and "The 6th Sense"
(with DJ Premier) are great songs. But what's up with
"A Film Called (Pimp)?" Or what about "Heat."
        I dunno. I rock this joint, but I don't think it's
the hip hop album of the year. Blackalicious' "Nia"
still holds that title for now.

P.S. Anyone heard that Slum Village joint? I got it on
bootleg vinyl, some company pressed them in the UK. If
you like Jay Dee's production on "Like Water," it's
    the same vein.
