I would have to say that Gilles Peterson is not a technical sort of DJ in
that he does'nt really attempt to fuck with the piece of music the artist
created, instead he has an incredible depth of musical knowledge and he
mixes across genre boundaries and stitches music from different decades
together. Some of his selections seem to be chosen for their relative
anonymity but he has something not every DJ has, even many of the brilliant
technician DJs lack his ability to put together playlists with real
integrity and musical depth. He is'nt about playing the very latest dub from
the artist getting the most attention in any given moment in time, instead
he is, to me at any rate, a DJ who plays very good music that he connects
together really well. He does have at least one mix cd that I know of
INCredible Gilles Peterson that I recommend. It does have some selections on
it that I could live without, but in the main it's pretty good. I would say
that he leans far into the jazzy side of things but he covers a lot of
ground well! Try his stuff, you might just like it but it is'nt 2-step or
anything specific really, just good music.
