With regards to the Major Labels, let's take a look at what they really do
and what they do best: Marketing. The major labels are no good at
discovering artists, nor are they good at developing artists, nor are they
good at supporting artists, but they are good as publicity machines...
Obviously no matter how much the underground Internet artist puts into
their promotion, they'll always be less known than the artists the majors
market.
Perhaps in the future, that will be their role in the future; the major
labels will simply be limited to being marketing vehicles, and A&R, artist
development and the production and distribution of music media (vinyl, CDs,
tapes, nontangible digital recordings) will be handled by subcontractors...
