I agree. If there is anyone who should be cut some slack as far as promoting
on the list (in my opinion) it would be Dirk, due to his consistent,
valuable feedback.
Is it a given that it's "inappropriate" for distributors and shops to
promote on the list? How far removed is promoting your shop's music, from
promoting where your band is playing, that dj skidmark is spinning
somewhere, or that you have mixed tapes for sale? I guess its up for debate
but i think all these things add value to the list. I have no problem with
Atomic Attack in hong kong, Soultrader in Germany, or Dubspot in NYC keeping
me up to date, *especially* if they bring their knowledge and experience to
the table. Come to think of it, a new release list is pretty similar to
something like the Jazzadelica setlist. Both posts hip you to the latest and
greatest AJ releases. Who's making more money from it is really none of my
concern.
I also want to add that i find it quite refreshing to have the "greedy
record label guy" ;) available for comment. That has been the one thing
lacking over the years in most of the conversations on this list concerning
subculture music types vs. big business. Dirk definitely provides a
different insight.
peace,
