Sad news from this week's Tower Records newsletter:
A recent trip to Manhattan peaked with an audience with Desco Records
co-founder PHILLIP LEHMAN. Fans of the label that guaranteed "Super Heavy,
Heavy Funk" will surely be saddened to hear that it is recently, er,
de-funked, Lehman and partner Gabriel Roth disagreeing on direction. But
Lehman has since started his own SOUL FIRE label, issuing a handful of
scorching limited-edition 45s, recorded exclusively on his Teac 4-track to
cassette. Needless to say, the new material -- including "I'm the
Man"/"Your Love (Is Something I Need)" by the great Lee Fields & the
Explorers and Sugarman 3's "Sold Funk"/"Funky Moon" -- is loooow-fi and
heavier than ever. The soul man played gracious host, spinning some of his
fave vintage funk cuts (as well as some prime Afrobeat) and previewing
tracks from Fields' upcoming full-length CD. Lehman is still working on a
web site for the new label, but you can still visit Desco's site
(http://www.descorecords.com) or check out that label's final release,
Sugarman 3's 'Soul Donkey,' issued earlier this year. (Ned Hammad)
