Tough question, what's the Cap'n's best port-o'-entry for a
this-lister; I'd have to go w/the recent Buddha reissue of _Safe as
Milk_. Some truly twisted acidpop-yet-HARD blues; _Mirror Man_ had
mainly long tracks, which one might compare to, I dunno, Fela Kuti
(if one were really *high*, anyway), but the reissue had a loada
bonus cuts which're in the same bag as the _Milk_ material. And
_Stricly Personal_, acidwashed production & all, is certainly worth
tracking down.
The loping, hard-boogie & mellotron-splashed '80's "comeback" stuff
is really inspired & groovin' as well-- I still remember seein' him
do "Ashtray Heart" on Saturday Night Live as a wee tot & feeling the
same fascination I felt watchin' _Cosmos_ & _In Search Of..._.
Someone should DEFINITELY work "Tropical Hot Dog Night" into a set--
Oh damn, forgot to mention _Clear Spot_. I'd probably but that one &
_Spotlight Kid_ really near the top.
The Trout's for advanced listeners. It'd be a damned shame if anyone
got put of the Cap'n from that one, since retrospectively it was a
bit of an anomaly. A buggy w/5 wheels, all different sizes, was how
I recall having heard the rhythmic philosophy of that one best
espoused.
Completely different subject, any Mescalito fans out there? I'm
really surprised I haven't seen them name-checked *once* here,
outside of setlists....
