There are still basic properties of physics that music obeys. A perfect 5th
interval is always going to sound good because of fundamental physics. That
is why it pops up again and again.
I agree there have been some new musical devices developed that need new
terminology but that doesn't mean we should throw out music theory.
I think the great musicians at the moment are the ones that can mix melodic,
harmonic, rhythmic and sonic innovation. Too many tracks these days only
focus on one or two aspects (usually just rhythmic and sonic). Michael
Reinboth (of Compost Records) made a good point that the reason d&b has
basically disappeared up its own backside is because it has become too
focussed on rhythms and basslines.
