I couldn't possibly agree with you more Stimp. In my humble opinion R&B/Soul
music is about living, not the intricacies of layering music. R&B, meaning
Rhythm & Blues, not adroit drum machine beats with people continuously
singing silly scales over the top. If someone wants avant garde there is
plenty of "pocket protector jazz" around to choose from.

If you want to check out something with a serious smack of soul then check
out Fat Possum Records (www.fatpossum.com) they've got T-Model Ford, Paul
Jones and a ton of others. It's all raw ass Belzoni, Mississippi Rhythm &
blues, but thats what it's all about. You should also check out the artitst
on Desco Records (www.descorecords.com) they got the bases covered in more
of the early 70's funk world. Also check out Fog City Records. They've just
put out the new Papa Mali record (straight up authentic voodoo funk/soul
power), and they got a record coming out by a group called MOFRO who's show
i saw (kinda memphis soul meets some nasty funk/blues).

None of these artists could really be compared with D'angelo or Maxwell or
whatever, but I think you'll find a lot more of what you're looking for with
these smaller labels than you will with the mainstream.

    Happy hunting

    Jojo
