I believe URB is still one of the few magazines that can cover "underground" music with a measure of credibility.
They've grown to a national magazine and changed their direction to appeal to a larger audience. Some of what I read might cater to the mainstream, but I have read every issue since I first discovered URB. (I skip what I'm not interested in though). I do admit that sometimes I have a tabloid fascination to see what makes people like cover boy Armand Van Helden tick, even if I can't stand his music.
I love reading XLR8R and Straight No Chaser and other mags as well. Their music coverage is more my style.
However, I also respect the fact that URB was the first mag in Los Angeles and the U.S. to give a voice to the culture that they cover and pretty much stick to their guns.
I wouldn't subscribe though.
