Courtney's point is that the music business is set up to pimp artists
as hard as possible. 97% of the artists who sign contracts are being
given a ridiculous shaft, simply because the system as it stands can
do whatever the fuck it wants. They've got all the capital, & if
their investment goes sour, they can pin the debt on the artist. And
if that fails, just take it as a tax write-off. If the artist,
however, earns the company millions, the artist is lucky to make what
a college professor makes.
Why do you think it's so absurd that an artist should reap 50% of the
profits that their art generates? I'm no businessman, but if I were,
& felt like keeping my soul, I'd really want to ensure that 70%+ went
back to the artist.
I guess your sympathy (if any such exists?) lies w/the venture
capitalists who are using the artists?
