Shit, what can I say? I went in all grumpy and salty
and not feeling well and did i say grumpy? And now,
lunchtime the next day, I'm still glowing. =)

Rob Paine did a pretty nice job of warming up the
crowd with a wide variety of smoothly blended stuff,
but Mr. G. P., the man 'imself, was everything I hoped
    and then some.

He opened with a snippet of Space is the Place for us
(as well as the new york crowd on monday), then
proceeded to lay down track after track of *good
music.* That "Naima" rmx is a must have!!! DAMN!!
He dropped nugget after nugget of incredible funk,
jazz, afro-whatever, and latin stuff, and did some
tasteful, selective mixing. It took all of 30 seconds
of his set to plaster a big goofy grin on my face that
hasn't let up yet. Everyone was so up and positive
and he spent half his set doing the happy dj dance
behind the tables. He dropped this ridiculous track
that I'd love to get an ID on: it starts out all
    batucada'd out, then blasts into a full-on old-school
jungle track. That's what I'm talking about! That's
what will bring world peace! Maybe a cure for PMS!

He played War-"The Ghetto", and a really pretty track
"Slowly and Surely" by someone who sounded like a
female d'angelo, (ID anyone?) eh, what else? oooh, the
4 hero rmx of black gold of the sun (which i hadn't
heard before! shame on me!)...and some archive-like
slightly electro-y stuff filled to capacity with soul,
then, shit! Gang Starr! Got me to thinkin'...if you
were going on tour on another continent, how the hell
would you decide what records to bring?

anyway, I was thinking...if all of us aj
representatives from around the US put our heads
together, maybe by the time he goes back home we could
trainspot all his records. what do you think? =)

So That's How It Is, huh??? =)

east coasters: Femi Kuti is this friday at the
trocadero in Philly, and Dego is next Wednesday @
Fluid as a guest for britt/wink's Womb night.
