Yeah bwoy!!! I was there. That Naked Music party (Monday) was fucking
deep, and kinda tough to get in at first (I waited for almost a half
hour). Rasoul blew my mind with his intricately woven deep house gems
mixed with techno soul. Mark Farina, and Marques Wyatt played excellent
deep, moody, soulful, jazzfunky house tunes. This was all in all a great
time.
The next night Tuesday was fucking amazing!!!! Check out this line
up: MJ Cole (best 2 step out there), Jazzanova (sexy brazillian beatz,
dubby jazzy breakbeats, and Corduroy's classic "Something in my Eye"
being played(tight mixing and beautiful programming), Peter Kruder (K &
D) (rocking the crowd with some old Young Disciples joint, and taking us
on a trip through deep funk, latin grooves, & bass heavy beats. Rainer
Truby (Compost Records) was excellent also. Acid Jazz is not DEAD, it's
just FREEFORM. Playing anything you want to an unexpecting listener. One
bummer $7 for a Corona (and no Newcastle Bass, Harp, ec.), $10 for a mix
drink. OUCH!!!!
The same night (earlier) was the Panhandle /Seasons party. I was there
until 1am. I caught some great dj's (didnt catch their names, maybe
somebody could help?) from 11- 1:00). They playe deep, dubby, funky, and
techy. And one guy played the MJ Cole mix of Valerie Etienne's
"Misunderstanding".
The best night for me was when I was walking around Wednesday night
after I just played the Marlin (small, but cool mellow crowd). I came
upon Club Blue (a tiny bar), where I notced A flyer on the wall stating
that Derrick Carter and friends (Classic party) were playing. I went up
to the door, and didn't really pay attention to who was the door guy,
and I looked up and it was Derrick Carter taking money. It was so cool
seeing this, only $3, and it was a benefit for his friend. I came in and
instantly met people from Mantis, Oil (Irwin- on Pagan & Toko), Richard
Greenham (from Pagan), & Laidback Luke Solomon. Luke played an amazing
set of deep, techy, soulful, funky grooves, with some vocals. And
Micheal Jackson's "should've been startin' somethin'". Then at 2,
Derrick came on and rocked the tightly packed crowd with his deep
electronic house. The place was jumpin'!!!! Incredible, and only $4 for
a Bass Ale. Props to Mantis, Luke, Oil, Pagan, Ritual, and Classic, for
making my night.
This is who I met and/or hung with: Shaboom (Dick Johnson), Sneak, Doc,
Paper (Miles), 20:20 Vision (Ralph Lawson -Huggy, & Christian), Halo
Varga (Siesta), Rasoul, King Britt (Ovum), Da Frenchies: Fabrice Monteco
(Superfunk) & Sebastian Leger (Blackjack), Cassius, DJ Deep, DJ Gregory
(Versatile), and Flat Eric (Mr. Oizo). Where was I: Cube?.......,
Tony Senghorne (Panhandle), Chris Duckenfield (Swag), Paul Johnson,
Swayzak, Nick Holder (DNH), Tim (83 West), Rob Payne (Worship), Robbie
Hardkiss, Cassio Ware, DJ Hell, JD & Eric (Deep Swing & Sun Kids), and
Felipe (who played the Indian fom Village People, was staying at our
hotel. He gave me a ride to my gig, too) HAHAHA, Weird!!!
Big tunes: Shaboom "Release the Pressure", Busy Fingers "Saxxy"
(G.I.T.), Universoul "Sunshine" (Urb.), Freaks (white label), the new
Peppermint Jam "Barrywhite w/ House of God" (what's that called?).
This WMC was a blast. I did alot of networking for our Urbanite
Recordings. Both our 001 & 002 releases were given out to 100+ people.
And we've gotten a an overwhelming resonse from over half of them. This
is how you do it.
I've gotten 30 white label promo's from many of the above, woo-hooo!!!!
