With all of these artists, I'd say the rule of thumb is anything
before '75 is going to be excellent. I've never heard Bethânia do
anything very funky, but that doesn't mean it's not there in the
catalog. Gilberto is def. the funkiest of that bunch; you should
also check out Jorge Ben's work from the period.

    Some of my faves:

    Caetano -- "White Album" (s/t, '69), s/t '68
    Gilberto -- _Expresso 2222_, "Cerebro Eletronico" (s/t, '69)
    Gal -- "Cinema Olympia" (s/t, '69), the other s/t '69
    Os Mutantes
    Jorge Ben -- _Africa Brasil_ & s/t '68
    _Doces Barbaros_
    v/a -- _Tropicália_
    Secos e Molhados

Those are some of the most far-out, as per my taste-- but almost all
the pre-'75 stuff is top-notch from those artists.

I get the feeling a lot of folks have heard later, schmaltzier
material from these folks (Gal esp.) which is preventing them from
checking out some of the most amazing music ever made; do not judge
these folks on their recent work!! It would be like judging the
Stones by _Bridges to Babylon_. For instance.
