hey B,
Yeah, Tabla Beat Science is a Laswell Axiom project, 'starring' master
tabla percussionist Zakir Hussain, who has played on literally hundreds
of albums over the years. Talvin Singh appears on a couple of tracks
[Toronto people make note: Talvin performs on tablas at the Pheonix on
Wed. Oct. 11], as do people like vocalist Ustad Sultan Khan, tabla
players/drummers Trilok Gurtu and Karsh Kale and others. Ten tracks, all
of'em good. Palm Pictures is releasing it.
Other recommendations: gosh, there are many, but if you're feeling this
and Nitin Sawhney's stuff, you've gotta check the entire Outcaste label
catalogue, including Badmarsh & Shri, Shri's mindblowing solo album, the
Untouchable Outcaste Beats comp. and more. I also really love the latest
Suns of Arqa, Cosmic Jugalbandi, out on Interchill in Canada
(interchill.com)... and the wicked Jolly Mukherjee release (Palm
Pictures). On the Latin tip, look out for the excellent Latin Travels
comp., new on Six Degrees, and the upcoming Latin Beats on Mr. Bongo,
which is somewhat of a tribute to Tito Puente.
That should get'cha started. Oh yeah, buy the full-length Da Lata if you
haven't already. :-) Take care.
