Cinematic Orchestra are unique in terms of moodyness...but...
The last DJ Food album, Kaliedascope can compare in lofi, cinematic tones
and emotional directness, while it can be a bit more edgy and frantic at
times. When I spoke with Strictly Kev (1/2 of DJ Food) he said they don't
use any studio musicians...all samples! Crazy!
Some of the stuff from Memphis Industries like the Blue States album (on ESL
domestically) is similar in its instrumental complexity, but has a more
clean, polished sound. There is also a new single, not on the LP called
"Walkabout" that may be out now (i have it on promo) with 3 very nice
remixes: a great downtempo mix from desmond williams and two nice mixes from
ESL's Thunderball. MI's Broadway Project is probably in the same lofi vein
but with a bit more of a indie/post-rock leaning (about 1/3 of their
matierial). Broad. Prjct has had (at least) several EPs, a seven inch (Pedro
RMX is dope!), and an LP (unfortunately the LP is on one 12" and the sound
quality is not that great...CD is probably better).
For the more "live" feel I would say check out Xploding Plastic on
Beatservice (a 7", an EP on Groovdis/beatservice, LP on CD) and Freeform
Arkestra on Straight Ahead (two 10" EP's, and a cut (or two) on the One Step
Ahead 7" compilation from Straight Ahead which maybe avail. on CD.) I
suppose they are both a bit more uptempo than CO but definately in the same
vein.
From a more Hip Hop perspective the Soulmates album from Nobody on Ubiquity
has quite a bit of intrumental material that doesn't seem so far off from
CO.
There is also a new Alpha album from Massive Attack's Melakolic label (on
astralwerks domestically), I have yet to hear it but the last one was
incredible! Has anyone heard this yet?
peace,
Chris Widman
