gilles is currently doing an end of the month worldwide thing
@ cargo in shoreditch where ninja, ammocity, ross allen & a few other a-j
related bods have nights. hoxton/shoreditch has become it's own sort of
west end since the demise of the bluenote with dj bars every five feet &
many nights of interest to anyone on this list visiting london.
the ministry of sound (the only interesting times i've been there was during
record company christmas parites, a warp party back in 93/94 with aphex twin
who lives across the road from it, and when larry levan (r.i.p.) played
there with every uk dj in attendance taking notes while none of the
punters/real people seemed to enjoy/appreciate what larry was doing, and
when they re-opened after closing down their movie theatre - mainly cause of
the free booze & networking opps @ the private parties)
i have had some horrible nights in the ministry of sound, not because of the
sound quality, but because of the attitude of the door and security staff,
and the general closed-mindedness of the people who attend. A friend of
mine (who shall remain nameless) put on a PA but had his camera not only
checked but stolen by security - he couldnt even photograph is own artist
performing! it took lawyers to get compensation from them!
(then again the guy that owns it has sued his own father!!!)
perhaps gilles residency will be in one of the smaller off-shoot bars and on
a thursday night with an evening that accomodates more open minded people,
live music and maybe even a room with jazz/hip hop - the sound system IS
good for bass heavy tracks in the mainroom.
the ministry of sound is house heaven and altho when it opened up years back
it so desperately wanted to be the paradise garage - new york - it so
hopelessly isnt. having been to paradise garage & heard levan there, been
to hear tony humphries do proper garage sunday nights out in newark years
back, and having seen the it from both sides (a west coast dj who moved to
the uk in 88 when the first bush was elected!) my comments are made with a
certain amount of knowledge.
the ministry of sound is a brilliant global marketing logo, but imho acid
jazz, talkin loud, ninja, nuphonic, strut, on-u sound, ubiquity, giant
steps, knitting factory & a whole heap of others are more worthy of my
sport. i live 15 minutes from the ministry but it's not my idea of 21st
century clubbing.
