Re: Gilles Peterson Ministry residencyAs long as Gilles does what he does and always has done and doesnīt begin to play less interesting stuff to please the audience there cant be anything about reaching out to more people can it? And Iīm sure heīll keep his artistic integrity no matter what... I think itīs wonderful that he and the scene that he promotes gets all the attention it (and he) deserves.

I really donīt think that we have to be worried about the modern electronic jazz scene being a over exploited hype kind of thing like drum īn bass or trip hop has become either. I mean, while trip hop was one particular sound and drum n bass was also one special concept, the modern electronic jazz scene isnīt limited to just that. With all itīs different styles of either broken beats or just 4/4, downtempo or uptempo, acoustic or electronic sounding forms and styles I canīt see what the typical modern jazz constellation that the major labels would be looking for would be or look like. (though Iīd like to add the singer in mine is very cute :-)

Its always an interesting question, is it better that this kind of music stays out of the mainstream, or do we encourage a bigger audience, open new ears etc? , and does that always mean "corruption" of the sound? GP going somewhere like this is an interesting concept, it seems like he's in a position to do deals like this where he still maintains his artistic integrity. We'll see... he's certainly putting himself about these days (witness the XY network tie in).
I feel like I want to turn people on to this sound, but it does lose some of the magic once it gets to popular: eg in the early nineties Massive Attack / Portishead sound, every record label hunting for a "trip hop"(preferably with good looking female vocalist)..
