22.04.01 Week 16
701 peeps on the page.
Happy birthday to Amanda Sage. My favourite artist in the
Universe. Do check www.amandasage.com for a glimpse of
Amanda's amazing talent. We be checking you on the 28th.
Nice to have you back in our solar system! We missed ya!
Shouts to Flow and Linus.
Hey Hannah B! I remember you! Nice to speak. We missed ya
too! Q: Does 'Olive Green' still work in Tower! Did ya ever get
her number! Come on Han, I need an excuse to visit Windsor!
Another Hanna in town this time via Helsinki. Hope you had
a good time Nanna. Stay in contact and give love to the rest
of the crew. To Minna too, thanks for entertaining me on
Saturday night. Yeah, you're a proper Finnish girl!
Congratulations to Jussi on his graduation. Enjoy your gifts.
Shouts to Tom Szirtes aka Shur-i-ken. Look out for an
excellent debut album on Jamie Odell's Freerange label.
Headz gonna have to buy the CD for a track called
'Awakenings'. Two quality twelve's too with remixes by
Landslide, Audiomontange Swell Session etc. Hal and
Robbie on the art work so you know it makes sense!
To Jake and Dom at 'Mouseorgan'. Do check out this night
in the future at the excellent 'Herbel' venue Kinglsland Rd E2.
The next Mouseorgan session is their third birthday and will
be at Herbal on Saturday June 16th. Very special guests on
the night are Fluid Ounce Records' Zero DB and Frank De JoJo
performing a live-ish rendition of their cover of "Turn Off The
Lights". Upstairs they will have Mufflewuffle DJ'S Eduardo Cervaza
and Sporran who, for those who don't know, are part of the
Brighton Mufflewuffle collective, infamous for their hedonistic
parties at The Jazz Rooms, and eclectic mix of disco, jazz,
house and rock! Punters are welcome to dress up in the
traditional MW style of "Homeboy or Raver"!
And yes Speedy Servini is an Arsenal supporter! Thanks to
all for reminding me of Tottenham's mid week effort. Don't
even bother talking to me about Sunday!
Also Aki and Koh at 'Cafe Zun Zun'. 'Vibe bar', Brick lane
each and every Saturday. Brazilian rhythms new and old
and the best bagels in town just up the road.
Anybody witness that nasty confrontation on NJW last week.
Nippon Nik vs opticaSENS! Pearl harbour all over again!
Japanese bullets flying across cyberspace like ICBM's
Thought I was gonna get nuked by a Toys Fac or File!
And all over something called Su-paka-pooh! Aiight!
I'm away next week so no newsletter! (701 sighs of relief)

#### #### This weeks chart #### ####
1. V/A - Out Patients Vol 2 (Hospital) CD-R
Not often we get to chart compilations at number 1, but this fully
deserving that mantle as Hospital records come with the goods
in their new instalment of Out Patients. All new and exclusive
and featuring the cream of today's top production teams.
Jazztronik, Swell Session, Les Gammas, Landslide etc. Even the
'Future Homosapiens' (remember them) make a long over due
visit to our ears! 11 tracks and all pushing the right buttons!
2. Marcos Valle - Escape (Far Out) 2xLP
Time travels but Mr Valle delivers what we know of him
already. Pure quality Brazilian viberphonics! It's been a
long time but I'm sure I can hear crickets singing. Authentic
Brazilian music in the 001. Spine tingling as NN would say!
3. The Underwolves - Under your Sky (Compost/JCR) 2xLP
This time Compost won't let the boys down like the other lot
did! What did happen to Island Blue? It may be over two years
old but the fact that its release is immanent is a testimony to the
fact that good things happen to those who wait. We have to
thank Compost too for getting on the case of this long lost
beauty. A truly exceptional album that to many needs no
introduction. Timeless.
4. Herbert - Bodily Functions (K7) CD-R
Matty boy lets rip with the next instalment of quirky style
lefties. Dani also adding the incredibly sexy lyric touch!
Anybody wanna argue that she ain't got the best 'come to
bed' voice on the planet! Anyway, It's another great album,
a great sound and we be looking forwards to playing this
stuff out! Is the rest of the planet feeling the Herbert thing?
5. At Jazz - Lab Funk (Mantis) 2xLP
No need to introduce this lot! Throughout the universe,
known for their polished production and remix skills.
This an excellent album from an excellent outfit including
the classic 'Touch the Sun' and 'Harmony'. Hope you
all got the last 'Wind and Sea' album too.
6. Stereotyp meets Tikiman - Jahman (G-Stone) 12"
This kid bordering on genius! Those of you who got off on
the remix for Juryman's Ethiopian track need to get ready
for this. A dark Viennese dubster for sure! I remember
hearing a track called 'Hempster' and knowing this fella
gonna be big! Like the time I saw Mike Tyson fight in
Madison Square garden in 85. Some things you know!
7. Modaji - S/T (Laws of Motion) 2xLP
21st century soul boy Dominic Jacobson finally delivers
his first long player! He's come along way since the days
of 'Starburst over Orion'. He's also matured into one of the
finest producers and songwriters around. Respect DHJ.
Lookout out for the awesome Everton Nelson vs Jazztronik
strings edition of 'One and the same' as the next single.
8. Block 16 - Find an Oasis (Nuphonic) CD-R
Suckaz for the strings, hold on to your arm chairs!
This gonna Bunson burn ya! Jhelisa returns with
the voice over but the orchestration and the bossa
groove killing us ever so slowly. Fug quiet things
down with a solid remix too.
9. V/A - Compost 100 (Compost) 4xLP
4 plates of bonkeroney Bavarian beats! I'm in heaven!
To celebrate the 100th release of this outstanding label
Compost come through with a compilation of all our fav
acts past and present. Some amazing music on this
album and I personally can't wait for the next one hundred
releases from Haager Street. Hats off and respect to all
the crews.
10. Moodymann - ? (KDJ) 12"
Black label, one side, no info! Who gives a flying! Kenny
Dixon Jr, Detroit bizniz back on my page. This one even
madder than previous excursions into moody house music.
Sadistic strings and ill informed programming. We love it!
11. K - Water Flame/Echo (Calm/Chari Chari mixes)(Rhythm Republic)12"
No doubt Nippon Nik getting damp with the Calm mix!
But Chari Chari hit the ambient note the best. Like
lavender oil and lemon grass in my bath tonight! Calm
mix on the percussive wave and that be why Nippon Nik
in need of pampers!
12. Shur-i-ken - Advance (Freerange) 2xLP & 2x12"
Wow! What a debut album for Mr Odell's Freerange label.
Look out to for Landslide and Swell Session remixes
forthcoming too. Shur-i-ken aka Tim Szirtes coming
through with mo twists and turns than a super market
trolley with a wonky wheel.
13. Aardvarck - Ludiek EP (Delsin) 12"
Broken Beats outta Holland? Believe! Yes
we take windmills, tulips and broken beats
wherever they are from, and this five track EP
certainly pulling nuff punches! Sounding like
a 2000 Black release. High praise indeed.
14. Vikter Duplaix - Manhood/City Spirits remixes (GAP) 12"
Five tracker that covers Vikter's excellent GAP
debut last year. 'Rima' steal the show with the
'Manhood' remix though both King Britt and Vikter
add exciting new licks to last years classic.
15. Nitan Sawhney - Sunset (London Elektricity mix)(V2) CD-R
Lecky roll out another top quality remix. We be feelin' the
DnB thing at ther mo and this the cream of the crop.
A proper roller!
16. Figarro - Run Around (Clairaudience) 12"
Peven Everett gracing our turntables yet again. This
time under the Figarro guise. Once again beautiful
instrumentation, keys, pianos, vibes, drums, percussion,
this track has it all. House music at it's very best.
17. Hirsohi Fujiwara & Shinichi Osawa - Lost Child (Instr)(Sony Japan) 12"
Modern day arrangements tend to be overlooked
in need of finding more welly for the dance floor! Well
this here arrangement, production and song presses
the right buttons every time As per usual we bypass
the vocal and get straight to the instrumental from the
guys who work the 'Mondo Grosso' & 'Bird' sound.
18. India Arie - Acoustic Soul (Motown) CD & 12"s
Kedar Massenburg and Co deliver another quality soulful
superstar. India's vocals and songwriting taking it to the
next level. Put the CD on repeat play!
19. V/A - The Brazil EP (V Recordings) 2x12"
Yippeeeee! Patife, Marky, Max De Castro and Fernada
finally find there way on vinyl into my box! Its been a long
time getting there! Even the CD-R was wearing out! This
the type of Drum n Bass that's got to bring the sun out!
20. Enola 5 - Moonlighting (Cooker) CD-R
Oh my god! Who is this crew! Three tracks
wearing out the soles of my shoes! 'Moonlighting'
drops the biggest bomb though. Turn right at the
lights and head up Kruder and Truby street.
21. Chris Bowden - Beautiful Nasty (4 Hero remix)(Ninja Tune) 12"
This mans axe takes you to places unknown and unseen.
Reminding me of Ornettes sound and sense. 4 Hero do
the remix proud too. We know how they work their
magic with Chris. It's a tough choice between the
original and the remix, both touching the spinal column,
both electrifying the nervous system.
22. Robert Nacken - Majomin (Spectrum Works) CD-R
This is where music begins and ends for me! Songs,
melodies, spirituality and so much more. Epic acoustic
music from the label that isn't afraid to differ. This the
guy too that wrote Karma's 'High Priestess'.
23. Hanna feat Gere - Laughing (Apollo) 12"
So pleased to have this on any format, Big thanks to
David for putting this my way. One of those beautiful
melodic drum n bass tunes that gives me da bumps.
Hanna being the vocalist. Singing sweet and
changing directions in this moody but mellow roller.
Forge been teasing me with this for weeks, now I
got my own.
24. Swell Session - I see through you/Gone (Hollow) CD-R
We think the follow up to the amazing and still
played out first twelve from Sweden's Hollow
recordings. Top teenager Ms Yukimi Nagano
adding those composed vocals once again.
A worthy follow up.
25. Le Mans - Mi Nouela Autobiografica (Kabuki remix)(Spectrum Works) CD-R
Well, after the comfy chair bizniz, time now to get
your dancing socks back on. It may be taken from
the excellent 'Folky' acoustic compilation on Spectrum
Works but Kabuki show no respect in lighting the fuse
with this cross breed fusion killa. A bomb!
26. V/A - Family (Versatile) 3xLP
Slick comp from Gilb-r and Co to mark the 5th
anniversary of the label. Restless Soul, Osulande,
Rima, Pariss Clemons all donating excellent tunes
to commemorate the mark. All tunes exclusive too.
27. Nathan Haines - Sound Travels (Chilli Funk) 2xLP
Again, so pleased to have all tracks on vinyl. Nathan's
album already destined for classic status. Time will travel
but this long player will live long in our spirits and record
boxes for sure. The first of many great albums we hope!
Look out for the live thing too.
28. Stratospheric - Neon Carlita (UFO remix)(Internal Bass) 12"
Maybe the best thing UFO have remixed in a while?
They leave out their trademark campness and get
down to the serious task of the groove. Bass licks
and key stabs reminding of some good ol fashioned
German bizniz.
29. V/T - Folky (Spectrum Works) CD-R
Acoustic music in digital times! Awesome collection
of new bizniz from suspects such as Scuba, Zero 7,
Les Gammas, Victor Davis. We also digging such
artists as Otto Lamani and Lief too. Pull up a comfy
chair and leave your dancing shoes in the corner!
30. Afronaught - Transcend Me (Apollo) 12"
Finished copies on the streets on London town!
Mass hysteria in the shops, grown men sobbing
as they buy at least three copies for their grandchildren!
Now you gotta wait for the O-Dawg album. It's a tough life!
#### #### Coffee compliment #### ####
Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66
'Look Around' (A&M SP4137) 1968
Dedicated to the Stamp Licker and my dad!
Gotta be my favourite Brasil 66 album.
SM took a trip here with some 'lush' strings and some
awesome arranging. Bossa beats for the easy listening?
Known to the Jazz Massive for 'Roda' and 'Tristeza' but
for me I get the pimples with the most beautiful record
after Cole Porter's 'Night and Day' which is 'Like a Lover'.
The 'Look of Love ain't bad either, nor is 'With a little
help from my friends'. Something about a Bergman,
Bacharach or Lennon composition! Think this was
probably produced by Herb too.
Thanks for my dad for putting me onto this when I
was 7 years old! Yeah, Cuki getting an early
education! Not sure if he missing his copy!
Thankfully papa's papa not subscribing to this page!
Bisous to the Stamp Licker too! You need this Suga!
