Definately agree with you - there's a lot out there, both
    good and bad.

Aw, come on now. You're giving the poor Puffster a bad
rap. Despite what you might say, Puff Daddy *is* hip hop,
or a part of it at least. Whether or not you like his take
on it is up to you, however. You gotta admit, though, some
of his stuff is/was pretty good, and at the very least,
very danceable. I recently picked up some older Notorious
B.I.G. stuff, and I think it's damn good (Warning,
Unbelievable, who shot ya, - all produced by the puffster).
It is kind of more on the commercial, and somewhat gangster
side of hip hop, so I suspect most listees probably won't
agree with me. And I liked that Mary J. Blige tune, "be
Happy" too. I mean, sure P. Diddy just lifted the hook
straight off of a Curtis Mayfield tune, but I still like
    it.

Anyways, the bottom line is that you shouldn't dismiss the
whole genre because of a few (or even a majority) of pretty
bad releases. During hip hop's so-called golden age (early
90's ish), it was easy to find phenomenal rap records, but
as hip hop's grown, the scene's splintered and become far
more varied. So yeah, there's all the horrid iced-out,
mysogynist, homophobic, bling-bling type stuff which you'll
hear on rapcity. But there's also some phenomenal gems,
especially in the underground and not-as-underground, with
artists keeping the conscious, open-minded Native Tongues
vibe going (and some have been mentioned in other posts, so
    I won't list'em all here).
