There are some problems with the "these tracks are not to be fucked
with" argument when it comes to 4Hero - firstly that 4Hero's
version of Naima, while respectful of the original, is nothing like
Coltrane's, and secondly that Dego did a substantially more modern
sounding version of "2000 Black" under one of his other aliases.
There's that whole last four minutes of the Nuyorican soul remix
too.
I'm definitely a bit torn over 4Hero's cover versions (can't you
tell?) - I think I'm with Elson when it comes to thinking that the
"Black Gold" remix was about as perfect an example of a "good"
cover version as you'll come across, in that it had the flavour of
the original but did something new with it, and overall I'd be
happier if all of 4Hero's covers were like that. But "Les Fleur" is
certainly not the first time they've been that conservative in a
cover.
