You should listen to what you like. Of course, not knowing the genre, that's easier said than done. But having been in the same boat myself, I can at least offer a suggestion.
Check out www.allmusic.com. The site provides reviews of an astounding array of artists and their releases. Sometimes I agree with the review, others I think the reviewer got a traffic ticket that morning. But more helpful to me than the reviews is that each page provides related artists or similar releases links. For me this has opened my eyes to an incredible array of artists that I had never heard of. Chances are strong that if you like a given artist, the related artists are at least worth checking out.
Similarly thedownbeat (http://www.thedownbeat.org/) provides some good reviews. Granted, they advertise themselves as downtempo and not as acid jazz, but there's enough overlap to still be more than helpful.
Last, start listening to the online streams you see listed here. Nothing like relying on the resources of others willing to share them.
And that's just what's online. The main thing, just give yourself time to explore.
