It's the digital equivalent of slowing down or speeding up the
turntable platter by hand when playing vinyl. Ie., if you are trying to
beatmatch two tracks, and the one you're mixing in is lagging behind,
you'll either speed up the platter by hand (vinyl) or push the speed up
pitch bend button (CD player). The idea is, that you don't have to cue
every time the beats are starting to get out of sync, but that you can
adjust the pitch "live".
Many CD players also make minor adjustments to the overall pitch when
you press the pitch bend button. (Ie., if you speed up the pitch
momentarily with the pitch bend, the pitch shifter is automatically
moved up by a fraction of %.) This can be very frustrating! The feature
may be good for beginners but for experienced (vinyl) beatmatchers this
is really annoying..
