something else to consider here when it comes to Napster...
1. how many labels but out crappy records with a great single or individual
track then force you to spend top dollar to find one or two tracks (this
happens even with major and not so major AJ releases). Yes there are many
great AJ records... and I buy!!! those records. But there are other artists
and labels who will to ride the wave on one or two strong tracks and then
bombard the consumer with filler in the remainder of the release. Yes there
are some avenues to buy individual MP3s but this is not always the case.
2. Napster is a great research tool to discover those records worth buying.
As with this list I learn a lot from Napster in terms of what is worth
buying and what is not. In addition, what a way to get into someone else's
collection. Hot lists are great because if you find things you like and
know in somebody else's collection you will find other things that may
interest you and ultimately buy.
3. Napster gives tremendous exposure to artists like many on AJ list many.
The only place many individuals are going to find out more about the music
of certain artists is on Napster. Living in Buffalo, NY I do not get
exposure to releases that make it to LA, NYC, San Fran, and Chicago (while I
do have good luck in Toronto but that's an 1.5 hours away). Even net
retailers are not going to have everything you are looking for some 12"s are
produced in very limited supply and then gobbled up quickly.
4. Napster Is natural extension of passionate music lovers. While Pedro
may be excessive (note his posts I consider harmless), in general trading is
going to lead me to purchase music by artists whose work I end up liking.
Whether it be that particular release or another release by that artist
5. While currently not having software to burn vinyl to CD... Napster gives
me opportunity to get MP3s of stuff I already own. In fact if anybody has
any advise on a good cheap way to plug a turntable into computer I would
love hear about it.
Note: I am in the $250 monthly range in my music spending habits so someone
is making $$$ off of me. A sick compulsive habit which I love dearly..(yet
maybe my bank account does not)
Cheers,
Scotty
