Re: A name for our music!I totally agree. Alhtough genre names help you
finding music it sometimes narrows your view. I found myself buying albums
only because they were hyped as nu-jazz or downbeat and was kind of
dissappointed. On the other hand, I would have missed some albums only
because they were categorized as rock, techno or whatsoever. This list is a
great source of information without that narrowing view. Let's keep it this
way.

HEY LET´S NOT!
The beautiful thing about our music is that it´s good music and not a
concept/genre thing!
Right now this is the most changing and developing sound of modern music
and as soon as someone starts labeling it there will be a concept of making
it.
What happened to the always new and changing sound of drum n' bass?
Also, there was a true exeperimental fever all over the world some years
ago with guys like Aphex and Autechre inspiring people to do their
completely own "non-concept" music. And... as soon as the experssion IDM
(Intelligent Dance Music) became a standard people seemed to start copying
the sound of the original IDM artists instead of trying to do their own
thing.
So. Let's not call it nu-jazz, post acid-jazz or whatever, we might end up
in a 2-step mainstream situation ;-) The most important thing is we like
this and that we have a forum to share our thoughts.

I've been following the thread about genres and the definition of Acid
Jazz. Although the discussions are interesting, I find that I'm not
satisfied with the explanations for what is and is not Acid Jazz. When we
build a preconception about a word, the word becomes laid in concrete. Thus
changing or "making space" in a genre like Acid Jazz is a losing battle --
people will always have the preconception that acid jazz is the acoustic
party souljazzfunk that the Acid Jazz label put out in the early 90's.
The music we all listen to has aspects from any number of music styles.
We all agree its not drum and bass; its not jazz, either... you get my
drift. Still, there are some qualities that make it recognizable and unique.
I'm talking Fila Brazillia and the Pork label, Peter Kruder, Studio!K7,
Ninja Tune, Compost Records, Talkin' Loud, Good Looking Records, OM Records,
Groove Armada, Dzihan & Kamien, Boojoo Bazou, Modaji, P'taah, King Kooba,
Nightmares on Wax, Jill Scott, VIkter Duplaix, St. Germain...
My challenge is this: Let's define a name for this music. Not another
sub-genre of a sub-genre, but a name that encompasses the plethora of styles
involved.
Everyone, please post your suggestions!
