I always liked the term "downtempo" to tell you the truth. Some of you
might have issues with this term seeing as a lot of AJ is as uptempo as
house or breakbeat stuff, but I feel the association of the term matches
pretty closely with what I think of as AJ. Also, to be honest, I never
liked the term "acid jazz" in the first place (probably because I associate
it with the pop wave of so called "acid jazz" groups that came out when I
was younger--soul coughing, etc.). In my mind, the "jazz" label sets some
unnecessary restrictions. I am so tired of hearing things that are
described as "jazzy"--the term for me has really lost all meaning. Also a
lot pof producers opt to put some horns and double bass over a breakbeat
loop and then all the sudden they're so "jazzy." I almost cringe when I
hear the term "jazz" associated with anything modern now. Keep in mind that
I am not a jazz aficionado like a lot of the people on this list, so I don't
have a lot of room to talk either. Just some thoughts.

I think you're missing the point -- I'm not talking about a sub-genre that
would cause music to be miscategorized time after time. I'd like to see the
complete opposite, so that you could actually go to a record store and find
your type of music where you would expect to find it -- not under "rock" or
"pop", but not under "techno" either. I'¨m not looking for another segment
of a segment, but rather one that would encompass all of the types of music
that gets discussed on this forum.

>I totally agree. Alhtough genre names help you finding music it sometimes
narrows your view. I found myself buying albums only because they were hyped
as nu-jazz or downbeat and was kind of dissappointed. On the other hand, I
would have missed some albums only because they were categorized as rock,
techno or whatsoever. This list is a great source of information without
that narrowing view. Let's keep it this way.
