I'm not sure where you are, Baltimore is it (?), but the Barnes & Nobel's
around here, NJ USA,have a pretty good selection and they all have
terminals. This is the best idea yet b/c instead of asking someone who
usually has no idea...you can type in the artist and yo'll get a listing of
all ablums, if they're in stock, and what genre they're catagorized
under....very helpful if you already know what you're looking for.

I'm not quite sure I'd go so far as to calling it 'perfect,' but I've been impressed with Modern Music, a local shop. Check them out at www.modernmusic.com. Within the store they have Techno, House, Acid Jazz and the other sections you might expect to find; and I have often found items of interest in places I'd never think to look. What made me look there in the first place is that they keep their inventory catalogue online, enabling anyone to find what they are looking for. And it's set up in such a way that the website links directly to their database, making any search up-to-date.
Now this assumes that you know what you're looking for. Of course, there's the other side of the argument - that you are browsing around looking for something new. I don't know of any way of catalogueing that makes that foolproof. this particular shop lets you listen to anything they have, but I still rely largely upon the recommendations of others, be it the salesfolks (who already know what I like), or online referals, like Allmusic or Thedownbeat. I wouldn't mind in the least if the store had terminals with that kind of information available.
