I was really diggin his Sacrebleu several years ago, and when I was in
Tokyo on a trip he happened be there for a show. In high hopes I went to
the club hoping to get a good boogie on... well first off I was not
rewarded with any of the feeling of the album rather he was playing a
straight house set ( and IMHO not even decent house) I was partly hoping
for a loungey style set, but to top off the dissapointing evening he felt
the need to crank up the volume to levels that where obviously not kosher
(the dj before him had no such troubles) for the soundsystem, in short the
whole thing was almost painful! so while I could barely even hear anything
more than distortion for the three or four hours that I was there,
in tokyo the trains stop at 1am so you're stuck at the club for
duration (luckily there was a second level to retreat to!) so to sum it up
he may be decent in the blending and mixing but from that experience I
can't say that he is that hot live and he CERTAINLY DID NOT play any
choice disco flavored cuts. But that said it was probably four years ago
so he's probably smoothed out a bunch....

    > Hey all. I'll just try and spark a discussion here. I have been blown away by Dimitri's "Playboy Mansion", and his "Disco Forever" release on BBE. What's really got me is the quality of his mixing. I haven't listened to a ton of mixed albums, but I'm left wondering can this guy be that good live? Or does he make it sound so good because he's in the studio and has all the time he needs to match the track and drop it with perfection? And how does he rank as a disco/house dj to those of you who have seen a lot of them? And the other side of the coin, mixing aside, how does his choice of cuts stack up against other djs in the genre? Is he "the man" as far as rare groove disco is concerned? I'd love to hear from you disco headz
